What is a sash window?
A sash window is a window made out of one or more movable panels or "sashes" that form a frame to hold panes of glass, which are often separated from other panes by strips of wood or metal (muntins).
While any window with this style of glazing is technically called "a sash window", the term is used almost exclusively to refer to windows where the panels are opened by sliding vertically, or horizontally, in sliding sash or sash and case (called a case because the weights are concealed in a box case).
The design of the sash window is attributed to the English scientist and inventor, Robert Hooke (no relation to the Captain) and the oldest known examples of sash windows were installed in England in the 1670s.
In Melbourne, many of the prestigious older suburbs feature Victorian architecture and sash windows feature prominently in East Melbourne, Fitzroy, Camberwell, Toorak, Brighton, etc. Have a look at some of the sash windows we have built or repaired around Melbourne!
